What's it really like being a domestic helper in Hong Kong versus what the agency promised
My ate is pushing me to apply as a DH in Hong Kong through an agency in Cubao. Salary daw is HK$4,990 minimum plus food and accommodation. For those na nakaranas na, is the reality close to what the agency papers say? Gusto ko malaman before I sign anything.

I finished a 2-year contract in Tsuen Wan and honestly the salary part was accurate, HK$4,990 landed in my HSBC every month and my employer even gave a small 13th month bonus during Chinese New Year. But the agency will not tell you about the placement fee they quietly collect, mine was around HK$3,000 deducted over 7 months so my first half year I barely had padala. Also the mandatory day off on Sunday is real by law, but some employers make you feel guilty for taking it, kaya alamin mo talaga ang employer bago ka pumirma. Ask the agency for the previous helper's contact and message her directly, that saved me from a bad household.

Consider Taiwan or Singapore muna before HK, medyo mas mataas ang take home minsan and the contracts are clearer. But HK has the strongest labor protection for DH in Asia, may minimum wage talaga na binabantayan. Weigh mo kung saan mas okay ang employer culture, hindi lang yung pinakamataas na number.

One tip walang nagsasabi, learn basic Cantonese before you fly, kahit yung mga words lang para sa market at pagluluto. My employer treated me way better once kaya ko nang makipag-usap sa kanila, and it helped when I go to Central on my day off to remit through my Filipino friends. Language talaga ang laking tulong sa respeto.

Mine was a nightmare, the agency in Cubao showed me a nice family sa profile pero pagdating ko iba pala, three kids plus taking care of the lola with dementia. The pay was correct but walang overtime kahit umaabot ako ng 11pm. Not all agencies lie but demand everything in writing and keep a photo of your contract in your phone.

Register with DMW not just the agency, at kunin mo ang OEC mo properly kasi yun ang proof na legal ka. Maraming naloko na dumaan sa backdoor tapos walang protection pag may problema abroad. The processing is tedious pero worth it para may masasandalan ka sa POLO office.
