Ano difference ng HMO at PhilHealth, kailangan ba pareho?

Nalilito ako sa HMO at PhilHealth. May PhilHealth ako (deducted sa sweldo), tapos may HMO din binigay ng company. Ano ba talaga difference nila? Kailangan ko pa ba kumuha ng sariling HMO kung may PhilHealth naman? Para saan ang bawat isa? Gusto ko lang maintindihan para masulit ko yung health benefits ko.

Simple explanation base sa experience ko. PhilHealth: government-mandated na health insurance, sumasagot ng PORSYON ng hospital bill (case rates) pag na-ospital ka o may major procedure. Basic coverage, hindi buo, pero libre-ish (deducted lang) at para sa lahat. HMO: private health plan (binibigay ng company o binibili mo), mas comprehensive, sumasagot ng consultations, check-ups, out-patient, lab tests, at hospital confinement (up to a limit). Yung HMO, mas malawak, may accredited doctors/hospitals ka na pwede puntahan na cashless o reimbursable. Kailangan ba pareho? Ideally, OO, kasi COMPLEMENTARY sila. Pag na-ospital ka, PhilHealth muna ang mag-bawas sa bill, tapos yung natira, sagot ng HMO (up to limit). Kaya mo masusulit pareho. Kung may HMO na binigay ng company, wag ka na muna bumili ng sarili unless kulang yung coverage o gusto mo i-extend sa family mo. Gamitin mo yung HMO sa regular check-ups, sayang kung hindi.

Yung company HMO, sulitin mo talaga habang meron ka. Nung employed ako, nag-annual check-up ako, nag-consult sa specialists, nag-dental, lahat libre via HMO. Marami hindi gumagamit, sayang. Pero ito heads up: yung HMO, madalas naka-tie sa employment mo. Pag nag-resign ka o na-lay off, MAWAWALA yun. Yung PhilHealth, portable, sayo yun basta bayad ka (o voluntary member pag walang trabaho). So kung malapit ka mag-resign o freelance, isipin mo kumuha ng sariling HMO o at least maintain mo PhilHealth. Nung nag-freelance ako, biglang wala akong HMO, kaya bumili ako ng individual plan. Mas mahal kesa company-provided pero worth para sa security. Yung dalawa, magkaibang purpose, pareho importante.

Para mas concrete: nung na-ospital ako (appendix), ganito nangyari. Total bill mga P80,000. PhilHealth sumagot ng case rate (mga P20,000-ish depende sa procedure). Yung natira na P60,000, sinagot ng HMO ko (nasa loob ng limit ko). Halos zero out-of-pocket ako. Yun ang power ng pagkakaroon ng pareho, nag-stack sila. Kung PhilHealth lang, may P60,000 pa akong babayaran. Kung HMO lang, magbabayad muna ako tapos mag-file, o mas mabilis maubos yung HMO limit. Kaya kung may pagpipilian, ideal na pareho meron ka. Yung HMO, i-check mo yung limit (annual at per illness) at accredited hospitals, para alam mo scope. Yung PhilHealth, siguraduhin updated contributions. Both working together, yun ang best protection.

Dagdag ko lang yung mga limitation para realistic ka. HMO: may annual limit, may mga exclusions (pre-existing conditions minsan hindi covered sa unang taon, cosmetic hindi covered), at may accredited network lang. Basahin mo yung fine print ng HMO mo. PhilHealth: hindi buong bill sinasagot, case rate lang, kaya kung walang HMO, may babayaran ka pa rin. Yung kombinasyon, best, pero alamin mo limitations para hindi ka ma-surprise. Ako, in-extend ko yung HMO ko sa magulang ko (dependent), extra bayad pero worth kasi sila yung mas prone magkasakit. Kung kaya ng budget, consider mo rin i-extend sa family. Pero at minimum, sulitin mo yung existing company HMO mo (regular check-ups!) at panatilihin PhilHealth. Understand mo yung coverage, para hindi sayang.
